Bird Banding at Caddo Lake

December 20, 2000

Wednesday, December 20, 2000.  This is a report of our fourth day of bird banding for the season just west of Caddo Lake near Jefferson, Texas.  Dr. Jim Ingold, ornithologist at LSU-Shreveport, led the banding effort.  Other participants included Dorothy Metzler of Longview, Becky Philen of Atlanta, Jackie Smith of Jefferson, Jeff Trahan of Centenary College in Shreveport, and Tom Walker of Jefferson.  A total of 46 birds were caught (32 new birds; 14 retraps).

Weather Conditions:  Cold.  The morning began in the low 20's but warmed to the low 50's by mid-afternoon. A strong wind was from the south. The morning began with clear skies but overcast conditions came in by early afternoon.

Time:  Started at 7:30 a.m. and nets were closed at 2:30 p.m. CST.

Number of Nets:  Thirteen (13)

Special Notes:  We caught seven Henslow's Sparrows, three of them retraps that were banded at the same site on Nov 25, 2000.  The four that were banded today bring the total number banded at this site (since March 2000) to 15.  We also caught our first Red-bellied Woodpecker in a net by a pecan tree.
